Personal Profile
Even though I grew up in Toronto I always possessed a love for nature which inspired my interest and dedication to environmental conservation. I was fortunate to find forestry in my undergraduate years and it was at this time that I became keenly aware of the social, economic and environmental issues which when thoughtfully considered, could be interwoven into good forest management practices. After completing a Master of Science in Forestry (Wood Chemistry) my journey led me to the pulp and paper industry where I spent 18 years in continuous process improvement and new paper-grade development. Seeing so many opportunities in industry for improving our environmental footprint, I returned to University of Toronto to pursue a Ph.D. in Forestry with focus on new material development from tree-based components. Since joining the Faculty of Forestry as a Professor, now part of John H. Daniels School of Architecture, Landscape and Design I have focused my research on new materials development from industrial bi-products and wood polymers and chemicals. Our research team is made up of dedicated individuals who possess the common goal of reduce plastic in the global environment through replacement with renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic materials, across a number of consumer and industrial markets.
